The building standing before you, known as the SIS Building, became the site of a high-profile attack on the evening of September 20, 2000. At quarter to ten that night, a rocket was fired from the nearby park of Spring Gardens toward the upper floors of the headquarters. The device used was a Russian-built RPG-22, a portable, single-use anti-tank weapon that had never before been seen or used on British soil. The projectile struck an eighth-floor window, causing damage to the exterior glass but failing to penetrate the structure’s heavily reinforced interior.
