Bonnington Square

In the late nineteen seventies, this square stood as a collection of derelict, council-owned properties slated for demolition. A group of squatters, artists, and activists moved in and organized themselves into a housing cooperative to prevent the buildings from being torn down. They negotiated a lease with the local council, which allowed them to renovate the homes and establish a self-governing community that persists to this day.
