Byam Shaw School of Art

The Byam Shaw School of Art began in nineteen ten when artists John Byam Shaw and Rex Vicat Cole established a new educational philosophy inside their own home. They rejected the rigid, formulaic teaching methods common in late Victorian academies, choosing instead to prioritize the direct observation of nature and the individual personality of each student. This focus created a distinct atmosphere where the school functioned more like an artist studio than a traditional classroom. The institution gained a reputation for producing graduates who favored narrative painting and strong draftsmanship over the abstract movements that eventually dominated the mid-twentieth century art world.
