Lisson Gallery

The Lisson Gallery began as a literal student squat. In 1967, twenty-one-year-old Nicholas Logsdail was a student at the Slade School of Fine Art who fixed up three rooms of a derelict building on Bell Street just to host an impromptu exhibition for his friends. The show nearly sold out, which encouraged Logsdail to keep the project alive. He was eventually expelled from his art school for poor attendance as he became fully occupied with running the gallery. This modest, accidental start transformed the building into a foundational space for the Minimalist and Conceptual art movements in Britain.
