On August 20, 1978, the quiet of a summer afternoon in Mayfair was shattered by an ambush on the grounds of the Europa Hotel in Grosvenor Square. A group of El Al airline crew members were gathered to board a bus for a stopover transit when two gunmen emerged and opened fire with submachine guns and hand grenades. The sudden violence killed flight attendant Irit Gidron and one of the attackers, while nine others were wounded, including passersby caught in the middle of a wedding party.
