The building you are approaching occupies the site of a grand 19th-century aristocratic mansion, which served as the primary London residence for the Dukes of Westminster for over a century. Before the current hotel was constructed in 1929, the land held a sprawling townhouse where the family displayed one of the world's finest private art collections, including works by Gainsborough and Velázquez. That original residence was so extensive that it featured a colonnaded screen along Upper Grosvenor Street, shielding the family from the public eye behind triumphal arches.
