Millbank Distillery

You are standing near the former site of the Millbank Distillery, a once-prominent fixture along the River Thames in Pimlico. In its heyday during the early nineteenth century, this facility was a powerhouse of London industry, operated by the firm Seager Evans and Company. At the height of its operation in 1820, the distillery was the largest rectifier in the city, producing more than half a million gallons of spirits, including the widely recognized Seagers Gin. The distillery occupied a strategic position on the riverbank, which allowed for the easy transport of ingredients and finished products. The business remained a staple of this riverside district for over a century, operating under a lease from the Duke of Westminster. By the early twentieth century, however, the industrial landscape of the area began to shift. The company’s lease finally expired in 1921, leading them to relocate their operations to Deptford by 1923. Following their departure, the site was repurposed as a garage for the British Motor Cab Company before eventually being cleared to make way for the modern Churchill Gardens housing estate that stands here today.
