Cromwell Road

Cromwell Road owes its very existence to the profits of the 1851 Great Exhibition, a massive international display of industry and culture held in nearby Hyde Park. When the event concluded, Prince Albert oversaw the purchase of the surrounding ninety acres of market gardens and estates to create a permanent cultural hub. He personally chose the name for this new artery to honor a house that allegedly stood at the intersection of Queen's Gate where the historical figure Oliver Cromwell once lived.
