The building you are approaching began its life in 1874 as the Orange Street School, a Victorian institution constructed to serve the densely packed and rapidly growing population of Southwark. To clear space for the original schoolhouse, authorities compulsorily purchased and demolished a labyrinth of cramped, overcrowded housing courts. Over the next century, the site underwent several educational transformations before finally closing its doors as an adult education center in 1996.
