Hales Gallery began in 1992 as a basement art space in Deptford, South London, situated directly beneath a cafe called the Revival Cafe. The gallery founder, Paul Hedge, famously split his working hours between managing the professional art exhibitions and cooking meals for cafe patrons upstairs. This unlikely dual existence served as the incubator for the early careers of prominent British artists like Jake and Dinos Chapman, who held their first exhibition at the gallery.
