East Street Market, known locally as The Lane, began as a chaotic scramble where the first person to claim a spot at eight in the morning held it for the day. Before the current licensing system, a police officer stood at the entrance and blew a whistle to signal the official start of trading. This practice turned the morning setup into a race where vendors vied for the best locations along the street.
