Burgess Park War Memorial

The Burgess Park War Memorial stands as a quiet but resilient bronze figure of Christ holding a crown of thorns. Unveiled in nineteen twenty, the statue was the work of the Danish artist Arild Rosenkrantz, a man deeply influenced by mysticism who spent much of his career exploring spiritual themes through painting and stained glass. The memorial was originally commissioned by local parishioners to honor those from the St George's Church community who lost their lives in the First World War. It has survived the dramatic transformation of the surrounding area, which was cleared of its Victorian homes and streets to make way for the expansive park you see today.
