Heygate Estate

The Heygate Estate was designed by architect Tim Tinker in the early nineteen seventies as a modernist utopia meant to improve the lives of residents through interconnected walkways and elevated streets. Tinker envisioned a self-contained community where pedestrians could move freely above the traffic, separated from the noise and danger of the surrounding city streets. This vision of total separation from the traditional street level ultimately created a labyrinthine environment that became isolated from the rest of Walworth. The complex featured massive concrete structures and a pedestrian bridge system that defied the traditional layout of the neighborhood.
