Opened in nineteen oh three, the structure originally housed a library, public baths, and a washhouse under one roof. This arrangement addressed the stark reality that many local families at the time lacked private bathrooms or laundry facilities in their cramped homes. By placing a library alongside fifty slipper baths and a steam-powered laundry, the designers created a civic hub where residents could simultaneously scrub their clothes and feed their minds.
