Sutherland Square Garden sits on land that once formed the edge of the expansive Royal Surrey Gardens. These famous nineteenth-century pleasure grounds featured a massive lake, a music hall, and even a zoological collection that housed the first giraffes seen in the country. To ensure the animals arrived without causing public alarm, keepers reportedly walked them across London from the docks in the middle of the night.
