Clarendon Building

The Clarendon Building stands out with its heavy, limestone portico, modeled after an ancient Roman temple and featuring four massive columns that dominate the streetscape. Completed in seventeen fifteen, it served as the home for the Oxford University Press for over a century. When workers moved thousands of heavy printing plates out of this building in eighteen thirty, they used a team of horses to pull the equipment across town to the current press headquarters on Walton Street.
