Greyfriars Place

Greyfriars Place takes its name from the Franciscan friars who arrived in Oxford in twelve twenty-four. They settled on a swampy island between two branches of the Trill Mill Stream, constructing a modest friary where they lived in poverty and focused on theology. Brother Agnellus of Pisa led the group, and they soon became deeply embedded in the academic life of the university. The original stone foundations still rest beneath the modern streets, marking the site where these scholars first established their order.
