John Gowing opened this business in eighteen seventy-eight, and four generations of the Gowing family have run it since. While many businesses in the city center have changed hands or rebranded, the family kept their original name above the door for nearly one hundred and fifty years. They still use the same heavy iron safe installed when they first opened.
