The White Horse pub on Broad Street features a narrow, timber-framed facade that pushes out over the sidewalk, appearing much as it did in the sixteenth century. It started as part of a larger lodging house for visitors to the nearby colleges. While students once filled these rooms, the pub gained a different reputation during the nineteen fifties. The writers J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis drank here regularly, often debating literature and theology in the cramped, wood-paneled snug at the back.
