Turf Tavern

The Turf Tavern sits at the end of a narrow, winding alley, tucked behind the massive stone walls of New College. Its low, timber-framed roof and crooked chimneys make the building look like it is sinking into the earth. It began as a fourteenth-century malt house, but students later turned it into a tavern to evade Oxford’s proctors, who held no jurisdiction over this specific patch of land. Bill Clinton famously visited here in nineteen sixty-eight, allegedly failing to inhale.
