Rewley Road Swing Bridge

historic

The Rewley Road Swing Bridge spans the Sheepwash Channel with a heavy iron frame painted in a faded, industrial grey. It functioned as a mechanical gate for trains entering Oxford via the London and North Western Railway. In eighteen fifty-one, workers pivoted the entire structure on a massive central bearing to clear the water for canal boats. It remains one of the oldest metal swing bridges in the country, keeping its original gear system tucked away beneath the deck.
