Sir William Dunn School of Pathology

The Sir William Dunn School of Pathology occupies a block of brick buildings with a distinctive, curved facade that faces onto South Parks Road. It serves as a laboratory for studying infectious diseases, but its fame stems from a desperate experiment in nineteen forty. Howard Florey and Ernst Chain transformed this building into a factory for penicillin, housing makeshift equipment and milk churns to brew the drug. They saved enough of the mold to test their first human patient, a local policeman dying of infection.
