The United Theater on Broadway

The United Theater features a terra cotta facade adorned with intricate, golden carvings of demons, angels, and mask-like faces. Opened in nineteen twenty-seven, this movie palace was the passion project of Mary Pickford and Charlie Chaplin. They joined forces with Douglas Fairbanks and Sid Grauman to build a venue that escaped the stuffiness of traditional opera houses. Chaplin once hid inside the building during its construction to avoid a process server, leaving the theater with a reputation for both glamour and mischief.
