California Plaza Park

The water cascading down the concrete amphitheater distinguishes California Plaza from the surrounding skyscrapers of Bunker Hill. Developers built this space in the mid-eighties as the centerpiece of a massive urban renewal project that leveled the neighborhood’s old Victorian houses. During the construction, workers uncovered the remains of a Victorian-era landfill filled with thousands of intact glass bottles and household items. These discarded remnants of a vanished community sit directly beneath the feet of people enjoying the modern, tiered plaza today.
