Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels is defined by its sand-colored concrete walls and the absence of traditional right angles. Designed by Rafael Moneo, the structure replaced the earthquake-damaged Cathedral of Saint Vibiana. Cardinal Roger Mahony pushed for a design that avoided the rigid, dark interiors of older cathedrals, favoring a light-filled space that could accommodate thousands. When the massive bronze doors swing open, they reveal a sanctuary where sunlight pours through thin, translucent alabaster windows instead of standard stained glass.
