Chung King Road

Chung King Road is a pedestrian alley lined with low-slung, stucco buildings painted in shades of imperial red and jade green. It was built in nineteen thirty-eight as a deliberate, theatrical recreation of a Chinese streetscape to replace the original Chinatown that had been razed for Union Station. Peter Soo Hoo and other community leaders organized this development to keep the neighborhood alive. For decades, it served as a bustling market, but today it houses contemporary art galleries behind those bright, historic facades.
