San Francisco Symphony

The Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall, home of the San Francisco Symphony, occupies a site with a long and varied history. Before the concert hall opened here in 1980, the land served as an athletic field for the former Commerce High School. Going back even further, the lot held the original Saint Ignatius Church and College, which were devastated during the 1906 earthquake. Today, the corner of Grove Street and Van Ness Avenue is marked by a massive, thirteen-foot bronze sculpture titled Large Four Piece Reclining Figure by the artist Henry Moore, which stands as a silent sentinel for the musicians and patrons passing through the glass-walled lobby.
