United Nations Plaza stands as a permanent tribute to the birth of the United Nations, which officially organized here in San Francisco in 1945. You are walking through a space specifically created to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of the signing of the United Nations Charter. The plaza was built in 1975 during the major reconstruction of Market Street, serving as a symbolic gateway between the city's main commercial artery and its grand Beaux-Arts Civic Center. Its design was a collaborative effort by renowned landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and the firms of Mario Ciampi and John Carl Warnecke.
