The Cartoon Art Museum began as a vision of comic book enthusiasts in 1984 who wanted to elevate sequential art to the level of other fine arts. Its primary founder was Malcolm Whyte, a publisher who recognized the cultural weight of comics long before they were widely accepted in traditional gallery spaces. In its early years, the museum operated without a permanent home, instead organizing pop-up exhibitions in various corporate offices and local museums to demonstrate that cartoons deserved professional preservation.
