Mechanics Monument

The Mechanics Monument features a massive bronze sculpture group anchored by a central figure of a blacksmith holding a sledgehammer. Douglas Tilden designed this fountain in nineteen oh one to celebrate the industrial laborers who built San Francisco. During the nineteen oh six earthquake, the surrounding neighborhood burned and crumbled, yet the heavy bronze figures remained standing entirely unscathed. Tilden stood in the wreckage and reportedly wept to see his creation survive while the rest of the city lay in ruins.
