India Basin Shoreline Park

Before this site became a public park, this shoreline served as the center of a gritty, industrial frontier known as Butchertown. Starting in the late nineteenth century, the area functioned as a massive slaughterhouse district where slatted floors in the buildings allowed waste to be swept directly into the twice-daily tides of the bay. Thousands of butchers, cowboys, and leather workers operated in this isolated pocket of the city, creating a unique and diverse community that stood apart from the rest of San Francisco. Today, you are standing on land that was transformed from a site of intense animal processing and maritime labor into a place of ecological restoration and public recreation.
