1986 San Francisco fireworks disaster

On April 4, 1986, the Bayview Industrial Park became the site of one of the most destructive industrial accidents in San Francisco history. A clandestine fireworks manufacturing operation, hidden inside a three-story warehouse at 1070 Revere Avenue, triggered a massive explosion that completely leveled the structure and damaged surrounding buildings. The blast was so powerful that it physically lifted the warehouse from its foundation, while the resulting fire quickly swept through an entire city block. At the time, the building was a hub for local artists and entrepreneurs, housing more than 120 small businesses, including cabinet makers, boat shops, and the archives of an underground comics publisher. These businesses were entirely destroyed, leaving many residents without their livelihoods, tools, or life work. Investigators later discovered that the fireworks operation had been disguised as a computer paper storage business to avoid detection by fire inspectors. The tragedy resulted in at least eight deaths, dozens of injuries, and approximately 10 million dollars in property damage.
