Williams station (Muni Metro)

Williams station occupies a distinctive position in the Muni Metro system because of its infrastructure. Unlike many older stations in the network, it was purpose-built as part of the T Third Street line, which opened in two thousand seven to reconnect the Bayview neighborhood to the rest of the city via light rail. Its platforms are staggered rather than directly opposite one another. The northbound platform sits just north of Williams Avenue, while the southbound platform is located to the south. This layout allows trains to clear the busy intersection before coming to a complete stop for passengers. Two blocks south of here lies a wye, a triangular track arrangement that allows trains to reverse their direction. This specific piece of equipment makes the station a vital operational hub, functioning as a terminus for short-turn trains whenever service demands require a line to be shortened or adjusted in real time.
