The Calibird Pollinator Sanctuary sits directly atop a Caltrain tunnel on Palou Avenue. Before its transformation in 2020, this land was a fire-damaged, polluted eyesore. The grassroots organization Dragonspunk reclaimed the site, laboring to remove toxins from the soil and replace them with California native plants. This space functions as a deliberate oasis for butterflies, bees, and birds that struggle to find habitat in the city’s dense urban grid. By incorporating host plants and reliable water sources, the sanctuary serves as a vital corridor for local pollinators.
