Hunters Point Power Plant

The Hunters Point Power Plant was once a massive industrial presence that dominated this shoreline for seventy-seven years. It began its life in nineteen twenty-nine as a steam plant that burned fuel oil to generate electricity for the growing city. Over the decades, it expanded into a sprawling complex of boilers and turbines, eventually becoming one of the most powerful and, to many neighbors, most polluting facilities in the region. The plant operated as an essential part of the local electrical grid until its final shutdown in two thousand six, marking the end of a long and contentious chapter for the Bayview-Hunters Point community.
