Building at 1813–1813B Sutter Street

The building at 1813 to 1813B Sutter Street stands as a survivor of a massive urban effort to reshape San Francisco. Built in 1876, this Italianate Victorian structure originally stood at 1624 Post Street. It spent nearly a century in its original location before the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency began clearing blocks for the Japan Center malls and the expansion of Geary Boulevard. Rather than demolishing this historic home, the city moved the entire structure to its current site on Sutter Street in 1973 to preserve it. Today, it remains a tangible link to the architectural history of the Western Addition and the evolution of the surrounding neighborhood.
