Madame C.J. Walker Home for Girls and Women

The Italianate rowhouse at two thousand sixty-six Pine Street served as a vital sanctuary for African American women from nineteen twenty-one until nineteen seventy-two. At a time when local boarding houses and the Young Women's Christian Association frequently refused to accommodate Black residents, the Madame C.J. Walker Home provided a necessary refuge. It functioned as a clearinghouse for newcomers, offering job placement, temporary shelter, and direct cash or clothing assistance to those navigating a segregated city.
