San Francisco Columbarium & Funeral Home

The San Francisco Columbarium stands as a rare survivor of a time when the city was a vast necropolis. In the late nineteenth century, this neighborhood was covered by sprawling burial grounds, including the large Odd Fellows Cemetery where this structure was built in 1898. While the city eventually banned burials and forced the relocation of nearly all graves to the town of Colma, this neoclassical rotunda was spared. It remains tucked away on its quiet cul-de-sac, serving as a portal to a buried history that most of the city around it has forgotten.
