Armour & Co. Building

The Armour and Company Building on Battery Street stands out for its yellow brick facade and the heavy, ornamental terra-cotta cornices crowning its roof. Built in nineteen fifteen, this structure served as the regional headquarters for the massive Chicago meatpacking firm. By the time it opened, Armour and Company moved tons of product through the San Francisco waterfront, operating a cold storage plant that allowed them to distribute beef and pork across the entire Pacific coast before modern refrigeration became standard in every home.
