Mabuhay Gardens

The faded, narrow facade of Mabuhay Gardens on Broadway sits beneath a vintage, vertically-stacked sign that still spells out its name. In the late nineteen seventies, this Filipino restaurant transformed into the epicenter of the San Francisco punk scene. Dirk Dirksen, known as the Pope of Punk, booked bands here seven nights a week while the smell of adobo lingered in the air. Dead Kennedys and the Avengers played their early sets on this tiny stage, often while the venue owner sat in the back.
