Strauss Statue

The Strauss Statue honors Joseph Strauss, the engineer who served as the chief designer of the Golden Gate Bridge. While many people associate the bridge with elegant architectural flourishes, Strauss was a staunch advocate for a functional, utilitarian design that prioritized structural reliability above all else. He personally reviewed every single calculation for the bridge, a task that required him to pore over complex engineering data for years to ensure the safety of the workers and the public. His dedication to the project was so intense that he pushed for the use of a safety net during construction, a decision that saved the lives of nineteen men who became known as the Halfway to Hell Club.
