Railroad Carfloat Pier

The long, finger-like pier extending into the bay is supported by heavy timber pilings that still hold the shape of a massive industrial conveyor. Before the bay bridge carried freight across the water, railroad companies used these carfloats to move entire train carriages onto barges. Switch engines would push cars onto the tracks laid directly onto the deck, ferry them across to Oakland, and connect them to the transcontinental lines. A lone rusted rail remains embedded in the salt-blasted wood.
