Root Division began in two thousand two as an academic assignment. Three students at the San Francisco Art Institute developed the concept in a seminar titled Artist as Endangered Species. They created the organization to solve the lack of affordable studio space for emerging creators in the Bay Area. The name emerged from this initial directed study project, which aimed to establish a sustainable hub where artists could trade labor for resources. Continue
