St. Joseph's Church at the corner of Howard and Tenth Streets stands as a survivor of the city's volatile history with earthquakes. The original church complex, established here in 1861, served a thriving Irish-Catholic neighborhood until the 1906 Great Earthquake and fire leveled the buildings. The structure you see today was completed in 1913, rising from the ashes to serve a new generation of parishioners.
