Golden Gate Promenade

The Golden Gate Promenade stretches two miles along the northern edge of the San Francisco Peninsula, serving as the bay-side gateway between the Marina District and the historic structures at Fort Point. This path rests on land that carries layers of vastly different histories, ranging from its origins as an ancestral shellmound site for the Ramaytush Ohlone people to its later life as a bustling military airfield. As you walk, you are traversing a reclaimed landscape where the United States Army once filled in tidal wetlands to support aviation, only for the National Park Service to later tear up that pavement and restore the area into the tidal marsh you see today.
