Santa Monica Pier Carousel

landmark

The Looff Hippodrome building houses a carousel with horses carved by hand in nineteen twenty-two. Its rounded roof and blue and white exterior walls distinguish it from the newer attractions on the pier. Charles Looff built this structure to showcase his own mechanical horses after moving his business from Long Beach. He designed the building to withstand the constant salt air and ocean winds. The carousel inside survived the demolition of the old amusement park in the nineteen seventies because residents fought to keep it.
