California Incline

The California Incline is a bridge and roadway structure that connects the high bluffs of Santa Monica to the Pacific Coast Highway below. Its signature feature is a slender, concrete-ribbed design that hugs the sandstone cliff face. In the late nineteen twenties, city engineers carved this path through the soft earth to bypass the steep, winding trails that formerly challenged early motorists. During the massive two thousand fifteen reconstruction, workers unearthed sea shells and whale bones trapped deep within the ancient, unstable cliffside.
