Bancroft Elementary School

The brick facade of Bancroft Elementary School is punctuated by a series of tall, arched windows that reach toward the roofline. Built in nineteen twenty-four, the structure replaced a smaller schoolhouse on the same site to accommodate the growing population of Mount Pleasant. Architect Snowden Ashford designed the building with a deliberate, symmetrical layout that became a model for District schools for decades. Inside, students once kept a tortoise named Speedy in the lobby, a tradition that lasted for over thirty years.
