St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church

The limestone walls of St. Stephen and the Incarnation rise with heavy, angular blocks that seem to press against the sidewalk. Inside, the sanctuary houses a massive mural painted by Lucien Whiting Powell, depicting the transfiguration of Jesus. In nineteen thirty, a fire gutted the interior, but the parish saved the mural by cutting it from the plaster and moving it to safety. That charred space was rebuilt with a starkness that remains, keeping the scorched history underneath the fresh paint.
