The Giant Metal Mantis features six legs, stands thirty feet tall, and shoots flames reaching six stories into the night sky. Originally built for the Burning Man festival in two thousand ten, it migrated from the Nevada desert to its permanent home on Fremont Street. The sculpture functions as a flamethrower, using liquid propane to create massive bursts of fire that heat the sidewalk below. Its scrap metal wings and antenna cast long, jagged shadows against the nearby casino walls.
